Environmental Compliance Program Strategies to Help You Through COVID-19

October 28, 2020

By: Carol Kawa

As countries around the world respond to challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, companies are attempting to recognize what these challenges mean for operations now and in the future. With many employees and non-essential contractors being unable to report to industrial sites, one challenge companies face is the management of environmental compliance programs and responsibilities.

The keys to mitigating environmental risk during the pandemic are:

  1. Proactively assessing and identifying areas of potential non-compliance and planning for alternative solutions, and
  2. Staying in constant communication with all personnel involved with the EH&S program (employees, consultants, environmental agencies).

How to Leverage External Resources

Our recommended solutions to help ease stressors caused by operational changes due to COVID-19 include:

  • Staff Extension: Supporting Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) compliance by serving as an extension of the facility’s operational staff. We are able to support our clients onsite (in a safe manner), remotely, or a combination of both.
  • Virtual Site Visits and Audits: Performing virtual audits by utilizing existing plant personnel as our eyes and ears through questionnaires, video-streaming, and recorded walk-throughs of the facility.
  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS): Deploying our EMS to provide accountability and ensure tasks are completed and deadlines are not missed. Our EMS provides company management the visibility necessary to determine if additional resources are needed to maintain compliance.

Montrose understands that each company faces unique challenges and we are committed to adapting our approach to support our clients through the pandemic.
