CASE STUDY
Enabling Proactive Compliance Management for Kinder Morgan
Project Summary/Opportunity
Kinder Morgan is one of North America’s largest energy infrastructure companies, operating pipelines and terminals. For over 15 years, Montrose has provided permit compliance support through permit translations, creating actionable tasks for front-line workers to ensure compliance with regulatory permits and federal, state, and local regulations.
Challenge
Permits and regulations are written in complex language. They can be extremely long, making it difficult for Environmental Managers to understand what is required to comply with a particular permit requirement or regulation. Additionally, Kinder Morgan operates several different types of facilities (gas plants, compressor stations, terminals), each with unique requirements and applicability to various regulations. Being assigned to varying types of facilities throughout the country make it challenging to manage environmental compliance without input from front-line operators.
Our Role
Providing expert support with permit translation services for Kinder Morgan each time a new or updated permit is issued, Montrose translated the permits into essential, actionable tasks. These tasks were loaded into an environmental management system and assigned to the appropriate party to complete them. By leveraging this library of tasks, Kinder Morgan ensures consistency of tasks across similar permits for similar facilities. As permits are reissued and regulations change, Montrose works with Kinder Morgan to ensure existing tasks are updated to fully capture compliance requirements.
Outcome
With the capability for Environmental Managers to easily manage compliance for various facilities through actionable tasks within their environmental management system, Kinder Morgan was able to manage compliance and mitigate risk more proactively. This streamlined approach not only enhanced operational efficiency but also ensured greater accountability across all levels of the organization.
