MONTROSE AIR QUALITY SERVICES PROUD TO BE A PARTNER IN DENVER’S $1 MILLION WIN IN BLOOMBERG PHILANTHROPIES MAYORS CHALLENGE

DENVER, CO – Michael R. Bloomberg announced on October 29, 2018 the city of Denver as one of nine winners of Bloomberg Philanthropies U.S. Mayors Challenge, a yearlong competition that challenged city leaders to uncover and test bold, inventive ideas to confront the toughest problems faced by cities today. The winning idea is in partnership with Denver Public Schools and aims to protect children with asthma from the negative effects of poor air quality.

Montrose Air Quality Services (MAQS), in partnership with Lunar Outpost, helped develop a cutting-edge air pollution sensor technology to create the citywide air quality monitoring program for the Mayors Challenge. These low-cost sensors will deploy near schools throughout the Denver community, capturing air quality data. “Our air quality experts are true innovators and problem solvers,” said Bob McDonald, Executive Director of the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment and the Public Health Administrator for the City of Denver.

MAQS helped manage the data validation of the sensors through comparison with Federal Equivalent Methods (FEMs) instrumentation housed in our MAQS-operated ambient station. Denver plans to utilize this real-time, local air quality data to inform the city’s approach to safer air and develop school-based programming to reduce pollution sources and limit children’s exposure to poor air quality.

“What it’s allowing us to do is give schools the ability to make decisions about the health of their kids using measurements taken basically in their playgrounds,” Michael Ogletree, Air Quality Program Manager for the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment told the Denver Post.

Michael B. Hancock, Mayor of Denver, CO also commented “Without local air-quality data paired with increased awareness and advocacy, children and their families will continue to develop chronic lung disease, miss school and work, struggle with increased healthcare costs, and experience decreased income-earning and career opportunities.”

MAQS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Montrose Environmental Group, Inc. (Montrose), supports Montrose’s core mission to help protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil that feeds us. MAQS’ participation in this air quality initiative, from technology development to its ongoing support in the deployment, testing, and data evaluation for Denver, exemplifies Montrose’s desire to engage with the communities in which we work and live and be innovators of broader air quality solutions that will create a positive impact on communities like Denver and beyond.
“I am excited to be part of this innovative program and hope we can transfer what we learn to other cities” commented Denver-based Patrick Clark, P.E., Regional Vice President of MAQS.
