Environmental Support for Finch West Light Rail Transit Construction Project
Project Summary
The Finch West light rail transit (LRT) project will bring an additional 11 kilometers and 18 stops of public transit, while renewing aging infrastructure. The project aims to reduce travel and connection times and provide an economic boost for the community. The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3) under Mosaic Transit Constructors General Partnership (Mosaic) and is owned by Metrolinx. Montrose’s Canadian Consulting & Engineering Division (formerly Matrix Solutions) has been working with Mosaic on several aspects of the project from the pre-construction phase and continues to support the project during construction activities.
Our Role
With a multi-disciplinary team of ecologists, hydrogeologists, contaminated soils specialists, engineers and inspectors, our team provides the following services for the project:
Environmental Director – Our team is currently acting in the role of Environmental Director for the Finch West LRT project, providing key leadership for Mosaic’s environmental and sustainability programs. This role includes senior review of all plans, reports, and documents under the project’s Environmental Obligations.
Contaminated Soils Investigations – In preparation for construction activities, our team is completing several environmental and geotechnical soil sampling programs to delineate contamination on the site. This includes management of a drilling and sampling program that includes hundreds of boreholes throughout the project area.
Erosion and Sediment Control Plans – Our team prepared comprehensive Erosion and Sediment Control Plans for six sites on the project, including sensitive lands under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Transportation Ontario and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.
Avian Surveys – Wildlife ecology teams completed nest sweeps at several locations along the project site, including woodlots and under bridges.
Project Outcome
Our team has provided responsive support for this dynamic and fast-paced design-build LRT construction project. We are proud to partner with Mosaic to offer ongoing support that ensures the project stays in compliance with stringent environmental obligations.
